Supporting learning at home
Research shows that one of the most important things a parent can do to boost the educational chances fo their children is to read to them. Just 10 minutes a day reading to your child can make an enormous difference to your child’s enjoyment of reading and to their confidence in themselves as a reader. This then impacts so many other areas in school.
Whenever possible, let your child see you reading for purpose and enjoyment. This can be anything - recipe books, car manuels, magazines, novels, TV guides etc. and encourage your child to recognise all the different forms that reading takes and to develop their own preferences. Reading the competition on the back of a ceral packed can be a cause for celebration!
Make a special place to keep reading books from school, books borrowed from the library and books bought as presents. This will show how important reading is to you.
